Should Raiders consider Curtis Samuel deal?

With the NFL draft just 24 days away, the Raiders are in position to grab a talented receiver in what is being billed as one of the greatest receiver drafts in several years.

However, the Raiders (who have big needs at receiver and have only added Nelson Agholor in free agency), potentially could have a chance to add a young veteran receiver via a trade. as there are rumors that the Carolina Panthers may trade Curtis Samuel.

Samuel is an interesting player. He doesn’t turn 24 until August. A second-round pick out of Ohio State in 2017, Samuel ran a blazing 4.31 40-yard dash out of college.

Yet, he hasn’t produced at a high rate in the NFL thus far. He was solid in 2019 with a career high 54 catches for 627 yards and six touchdowns.

The Raiders could use that type of production from a young player with the speed that would entice Jon Gruden.

The compensation probably would be fairly reasonable. If the Raiders are interested, they should call Carolina and start the conversation with their fifth-round pick.

Even with Samuel, the Raiders would likely address the receiver position in the first round.

Adding a player like Samuel could help turn the receiver position into a strength at a reasonable price.

Samuel will be a free gent after next year, so the Raiders could try to extend him during the season if he produces.

Meanwhile, the Raiders are still being connected to Brandin Cooks in trade talks. If I were the Raiders, I’d consider Samuel more because he’s younger, healthier and probably would be cheaper.

UPDATE: There is a report, saying the Panthers aren’t shopping Samuel. Still may be worth a call.
