Near the beginning of his tenure as Raiders GM, Mike Mayock traded a third rounder and a fifth rounder for a star receiver who required a big raise as compensation. The next month, he traded up and drafted receiver Hunter Renfrow in the fifth round, costing him a fifth and a seventh.
Five months later, Mayock traded a sixth rounder to the Green Bay Packers for receiver Trevor Davis, and less than a month later he traded a 2021 fifth for receiver Zay Jones.
In Thursday’s first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Mayock selected receiver Henry Ruggs III with the 12th overall pick. On Friday, Mayock selected receiver/running back Lynn Bowden with the 80th overall pick and receiver Bryan Edwards with the 81st overall pick. The 80th pick was their own, the 81st was acquired in the trade of Gareon Conley to the Houston Texans.
All in all, Mayock has now used nine draft picks on wide receivers in the last 13 months. When you look at what those trades have resulted in, we can assume that by next season those nine picks might look like four receivers: Ruggs, Renfrow, Bowden, and Edwards. Jones has some work left to do.
I don’t know what else to say about this. Just wow.
