Derek Carr has a lot to prove in 2020. He feels that he’s primed to have a great season, and a lot of Raiders fans seem to think so as well. Carr caught the attention of Raiders general manager Mike Mayock, who praised Carr after seeing what he did during the summer.
He joined NFL Network’s on Sunday “Move the Sticks” and had this to say:
“We are believers in Derek Carr,” Mayock said. “We think he’s taken another step. I love what he did in the offseason. He had 15 to 30 guys working out with him every day. We had a big group of guys here in Vegas. What’s important to me is it confirmed why Derek is on our team, that all these guys are flying in. I’m talking about offense and defense. That breathes a certain confidence and camaraderie. I feel like he’s taking the next step I wanted to see.”
In addition to being high on his starting quarterback, Mayock also was high on his backup quarterback, Marcus Mariota. This offseason, the Raiders signed him to a record-breaking deal for a backup QB.
“Jon [Gruden] and I had a comfort level with Marcus Marotia,” he said. “If you want to be a good football team, you’re only as good as your backup quarterback. You are one snap away. You’re putting everybody at risk if there’s a drastic reduction in talent.”
That’s an interesting quote for sure, I’ve never heard that one. What’re your thoughts on what Gruden said? Do you think a team is as good as their backup QB?
