Silver Minings: Could Trent Brown be released?

It is getting to be salary-cap season in the NFL and the Las Vegas Raiders will have to do some cost cutting to create cap room for free agent, which starts in two months.

There are some obvious cap casualty candidates such as wide receiver Tyrell Williams and and cornerback Lamarcus Joyner. But could right tackle Trent Brown be among the players the Raiders might walk away from?

Brown signed a four-year, $66 million deal in March, 2019. If the Raiders cut Brown there would be no dead money on the cap. So, it would be clean.

But the Raiders signed Brown, 27, to be part of the team for four seasons. He is a terrific player, but he hasn’t stayed healthy. He has missed half of the 32 games since signing with the Raiders. He missed 11 games in 2020.

While it is early and anything can happen, I’d guess, at the moment, that the Raiders decide to keep Brown and hope he is more healthy in 2021 because there really isn’t a suitable other option at the position.
