Raiders defensive coordinator search: Getting to know Joe Barry

A look at the latest candidate to replace Paul Guenther

NFL: Los Angeles Rams-Training Camp

We are continuing our look at Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator candidates to replace the fired Paul Guenther.

Initially, the top two candidates appear to be former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and Los Angeles Rams linebackers coach Joe Barry, although other names could emerge.

Earlier, we looked at Bradley and now it’s Barry’s turn.

Age:
50.

Current job:
Barry is the assistant head coach and linebackers coach of the Los Angeles Rams.

NFL defensive coordinator experience:
Barry was the defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions from 2007-08 and in Washington from 2015-16. The head coach in Detroit with Barry was Raiders’ defensive line coach Rod Marinelli, who is Barry’s father-in-law.

What he’s known for:
Barry is an experienced NFL coach who is known as a great motivator.

Jon Gruden connection:
Bradley was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ linebackers coach from 2003-06 under Gruden.

Why he would fit in Las Vegas:
He has been a defensive coordinator twice before and Gruden knows him and believes in him. The Marinelli connection doesn’t hurt his chances, either.
