An example of an effective coaching adjustment.

I've seen a few outlets bring attention to the increase in play action passing which has worked out incredibly well. Whoever came up with this adjustment deserves all kinds of credit. It has bolstered the run game and pass game by keeping defenses off balance. Gruden wanted balance with no element of deception, and that's playing checkers at best. But for keen football eyes, there has been an adjustment within the adjustment: The play action has been almost exclusively front side. Carr is terrible at backside play action fakes. They just don't look believable and on top of that, he isn't comfortable when a defender has gained any sort of penetration once he tries to reset. By faking the inside hand off across his body two things are accomplished: A) Carr can continuously read the field until release and B) it allows for "quick hitters" in the run game when he does hand off the ball. The fake holds the LBs but since the RB isn't as deep, they are able to hit the gaps a count quicker resulting in far fewer negative and no gain run. I'm absolutely loving what I am seeing, an offense dictating to the defense more than not. "This is the way."
