‘Jury is still out’ on Trent Brown’s future with Raiders

Shortly before Mike Mayock’s scheduled media briefing on Wednesday, NFL Media reported that the Las Vegas Raiders may trade right tackle Trent Brown.

There has been talk he could be cut this offseason and now it seems a deal is possible as well.

In his presser, the Raiders’ GM didn’t say anything to end the speculation that Brown may have played his last game with Las Vegas. Asked directly if Brown — who signed a four-year, $66 million deal with the Raiders in 2019 making him the richest offensive lineman in the NFL at the time — Mayock said “the jury is still out.”

I reported earlier in the offseason that the Raiders were spending a lot of time considering Brown’s future and a release was possible. Now, with the trade report and Mayock being noncommittal, the possibility of Brown leaving the Raiders is extremely real.

He could soon join right guard Gabe Jackson as a former Raider. It’s being reported Jackson will be cut and Mayock didn’t “confirm or deny” it.

The biggest problem with Brown in his two seasons with the Raiders has been availability. He missed 11 games in 2020 and 16 of 32 games since signing with the team. There has also been rumblings around the team on how much Brown loves football.

Mayock said Wednesday when he does play, Brown is a top-level, dominant player ... but that Brown must be in shape and be committed.

Thus, the Raiders’ decision on Brown is still pending.

UPDATE:
