Is Moehrig really the answer?

I’m not coming in here with a bunch of stats and facts, just observations.

-

What I saw this season was a kid who was out of position and late on the ball as the rule, and made a couple plays as the exception. All in all, the kid was just no help to us.

-

Now, this seems to be a recurring theme with our FS’s. And it doesn’t seem to matter who the DC is, or whether the FS was an FA or a draftee, whether he was a 2nd rounder or a 5th rounder. They just all seem to come here and suck, unless their name is Woodson.

-

Think about it. Over the last 20+ years we’ve had 2 good FS’s. And both their names have been Woodson. I can’t think of another one who was really good, but maybe one of you can

I always thought Nnamdi would have made a GREAT FS, but nobody wanted to move him. Someone should have pulled him off the trash heap and tried that. But I digress.

-

Even with the Woodson, they were on the back end of their careers when we brought them into the position, just for a couple years each. We haven’t had a real mainstay at FS who can hold down the position with real competence.

-

I can think of some obviously elite CBs who spent several years w us locking guys down. Some great pass rushers, one of whom is completely terrorizing guys right now and paving his way towards Canton if he can keep it up for another 10 yrs.

-

Darrell Russell was an all-pro DT for us for a while, but that wasn’t to be. But we’d bring in studs like Big Ted Washington and Richard Seymour, so it’s not like we neglected the interior.

At LB we had Biekert - never a pro bowler but a definite mainstay for the S&B. We brought in studs at times like Romanowski who played like a beast for us. We were even drafting guys in the first round - Napo Harris. Tyler Brayton. Couple of kisses but we tried.

-

To be fair we drafted S in the first as well. Derrick Gibson, Michael Huff, Karl Joseph. All bad misses. Joseph would have been a good 4th round pick I think. A solid backup S.

-

It just seems to me like the S position is extremely hard for us. We can get good help either in the draft or FA in pretty much all the other spots, but not this one. Why?

-

Maybe it’s the Stingley curse.
