A (very) early look at a potential 2023 roster

Offense

QB
FA, Jarret Stidham, Chase Garbers

The Carr era has mercifully ended but all signs point to replacing him with a veteran, not a rookie. Several capable vets are available this year in FA or trade. Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Garrapollo, Jacoby Brissett, Baker Mayfield and others have been connected to the team. Stidham certainly returns as he proved he's more than capable backup and even a potential starter if we don't get one of the top veteran QB's. Garbers will likely compete with a late draft pick or UDFA to stay on the roster.

OL
Kolton Miller, Dylan Parham, Andre James, Jermaine Eluemenor, FA/Rookie/Thayer Munford

I don't see McZ tweaking with the left side but the right side needs improvement. Eluemenor is a coach favorite and returns to play his natural position at RG. An upgrade at RT should come from FA or the draft with Munford in competition to start. In addition there will be 3-4 players added for depth. Need some help here but not an overhaul by any means.

RB
Josh Jacobs, Zamir White, Amir Abdullah, Brittain Brown

Jacobs is franchise tagged after his rushing title and likely signs a 3 year deal. Brown takes over Bolden's duties on ST and RB4. Otherwise everyone else returns. Would like to see Sincere McCormick challenge for a roster spot.

FB
Jakob Johnson

Johnson returns as the big-dog FB that helped Jacobs get the title.

WR
Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, Mack Hollins, FA/Rookie, FA/Rookie

Hollins returns on a well-deserved extension. The backend of the WR group needs an injection of quality depth and ST ability, ideally one from the draft class to add youth and speed.

TE
Darren Waller, FA/Rookie, FA/Rookie/Fotherigham

Foster Moreau walks in FA. Add TE2 in the draft and competition for Cole at TE3.

Defense

DT
FA/Rookie, FA/Rookie, Mathew Butler, Neil Farrell, Jr

Bilal Nichols was a huge disappointment and should be released. Billings or Tillary re-signed only for depth. Last years draft picks did absolutely nothing they both should be fighting for roster spots. Obviously this is one of the top priorities in the offseason we're going to have spend FA capital and draft picks to address this massive hold in the Defense.

Edge
Maxx Crosby, Chandler Jones, Malcolm Koonce, FA/Rookie

Need to add a legit starter to spell Jones, who needs to move to a 3rd down role. And Koonce needs competition in a make-or-break season for him.

LB
Denzel Perryman, Devine Deablo, FA/Rookie, Luke Masterson

This is not a strong group but Perryman is a team leader and is a top 10 LB when healthy. The rest need competition immediately. We need help here but even one additional quality starter would make a big difference.

CB
Rock Ya-Sin, Nate Hobbs, FA/Rookie, Sam Webb, Amik Robertson, Tyler Hall

Ya-Sin returns on a reasonable extension, he played well until he was injured. After Hobbs, the rest of the group is competing for jobs. We definitely need to add *at least* 1 additional legit starter from FA or high in the draft and maybe more.

S
FA/Rookie, Duron Harmon, Treyvon Moehrig, Isaiah Pola-Mao

Harmon was a team captain and likely returns as role player. We need to add a *legit* SS starter from FA/draft and more competition for the backend.

ST
Daniel Carlson, AJ Cole, Trent Sieg

Best group in the NFL. No changes needed.

Summary

I count 2-3 new starters on Offense. 4-5 on Defense. And plenty of depth on both sides. It seems like alot on the surface but it's doable. We have $60M in cap space and 11 draft picks to work with. More than enough ammo to upgrade on Defense/RT and improve depth across the board.

If I were to guess, we go FA route for QB, RT/OL and then go heavy Defense in the draft, then add Offensive players late and in UDFA. Of course we'll need to add serious help from FA on Defense as well. The good news is the Offense is in good shape doesn't need a ton - assuming we figure out QB. Surely there's a plan in place to do that otherwise Carr wouldn't have been giving his walking papers.

If the right moves are made, we're definitely a legit playoff contender again in 2023.

Should be exciting to see how it all plays out. I believe we'll have a strong offseason and be in good shape for training camp.

Go Raiders!
