Silver Minings: Impressions from Marcus Mariota’s Raiders debut

Former Titans QB took over for the injured Derek Carr

The Raiders got a chance to see what they had in their expensive backup quarterback last night. During the offseason, the Raiders signed former first-round pick Marcus Mariota to a two-year contract worth over $17 million, making him the highest-paid back up quarterback in the NFL.

Derek Carr exited the game in the first quarter with a groin injury. As of the time of this article, there’s no update as to the severity of the injury, so it’s unclear as to whether or not we’ll see him return at all this season.

Mariota came in, making his first appearance with the Raiders and his first appearance in a year. He completed 17 of 28 passes for 226 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 88 yards on nine carries with a touchdown.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t pull off the victory, as the Raiders lost a close game in overtime. The Raiders are still technically alive in the playoff hunt, but this all but eliminated them from contention. At this point, you might as well see what you have in Mariota to close out the season.
