Pocket management is a big question mark with Raiders new QB

Heading into the offseason, the Las Vegas Raiders didn’t make it a secret that they were going to be in the market for a quarterback. However, signing Gardner Minshew to a two-year, $25 million contract ($15 million guaranteed) in free agency was still a surprising move.

Minshew has primarily been a backup during his five-year career, serving as a Week 1 starter only once, in 2020 before suffering an injury and eventually getting benched later that year. Other than that season, he’s only started games when the quarterback in front of him wasn’t suited up.

Inconsistent play is a big reason why the Washington State product hasn’t been able to hold down a starting spot, most notably regarding his pocket management as that’s a consistent theme in the clips below.

Gardner Minshew has a lot of unnecessary movement in the pocket. Drifts here without any pressure and throws without his feet set pic.twitter.com/UFh4QLMxqD
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) March 14, 2024

We’ll start with probably the most frustrating clip of the bunch.

It’s third and long and while the Patriots have a stunt or line game called, there’s no pressure in the pocket but Minshew decides to drift out of it anyway. If anything, he ends up running himself into pressure as No. 48 has a clear path to him and doesn’t even need to engage with the tackle.

On top of that, Minshew throws without having his feet set so the pass is wildly inaccurate and nowhere close to catchable. Had he stayed in the pocket and kept his feet in the ground, he would have had a better chance of getting the ball over the defensive back and to the target for a first down.

No pressure but Gardner Minshew dances in the pocket and doesn't set his feet to throw pic.twitter.com/6g0Fb3FERu
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) March 14, 2024

Another issue that Minshew has is he doesn’t see the middle of the field well, or at all sometimes. New England is in man coverage and Indianapolis’ inside slot receiver is open on the out-breaking route at the 30-yard-line on the hashmark. However, Minshew doesn’t pull the trigger.

Instead, he drifts backward in the pocket and reaches a depth of about 15 yards, which leaves the offensive tackles out to dry in pass protection. Generally speaking, quarterbacks shouldn’t drop any deeper than 10 yards because it creates an easier path for edge rushers to get pressure since they won’t have to turn a tight corner.

Granted, the tackles and running back do an excellent job here as there still is no pressure. However, Minshew starts to scramble instead of just stepping up into the clean pocket. He also throws without having his feet set again and the ball sails on him, falling incomplete for another failed third down conversion.

This time, Gardner Minshew does a good job of escaping the pocket and setting his feet to deliver a good ball down the field pic.twitter.com/1DN5BbL60r
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) March 14, 2024

Now, here’s an example of the Jekyll and Hyde portion of Minshew’s game. This time, he is facing some pressure and is right to step up and escape the pocket with T.J. Watt closing in. He also does a good job of keeping his eyes down the field and knowing his limitations.

The outside receiver is open on the post route down the field, but Minshew doesn’t have the arm strength to make that throw on the run. Instead, he continues to scramble and let someone else break free before setting his feet and making a good throw for a big gain.

Look at the difference in accuracy between this throw and the two above. This one is well-placed to get over the defensive back and hits the receiver right in the facemask. Getting his feet in the ground before throwing is a big key to the five-year pro’s game. He’s not someone who should be making a lot of off-platform throws.

Gardner Minshew doesn't need to drift this far but this was a solid ball pic.twitter.com/Wi3tXT0VRf
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) March 14, 2024

Again, we’ll get a little bit of the good and bad here.

While the left tackle is getting pushed into the pocket and Minshew is right to move a little bit, he only needs to take one side step instead of two or three as he has plenty of room to make the throw. Also, the slot receiver at the bottom of the screen is open over the middle of the field, but he turns that down.

However, he does eventually get his feet set and makes a decent throw down the field for a first down. Obviously, the offense will take plays that move the chains 10 times out of 10, but there are certain elements of this rep by Minshew that can lead to some of the mistakes noted above.

Nice strike by Gardner Minshew to keep the ball away from the LB pic.twitter.com/CXTNKNyJKR
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) March 14, 2024

Here we’ll get a look at what Minshew can do when he stays in the pocket.

He starts the play by reading the three-receiver side but nothing is open. So, he finds the middle linebacker and sees the backer parked over the center as the middle hook defender on the Cover 1 call. Then, Minshew snaps his head around and has decent timing to hit the backside dig and keep the backer from being able to make a play on the ball.

That’s solid eye manipulation and anticipation which helps when a quarterback doesn’t have a strong arm.

Gardner Minshew does a nice job of avoiding pressure here and makes a nice throw with a pass-rusher in his face pic.twitter.com/4OFo2heoHZ
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) March 14, 2024

We’ll end with the best rep of the bunch.

This time, pressure is starting to come as the right guard gets beat and Minshew does a good job of avoiding it without drifting too far or leaving the pocket. Pittsburgh also has a delayed blitz with the linebacker, meaning after avoiding one defender, the quarterback now has to deal with a free rusher barreling down on him and in his face.

However, one of Minshew’s strengths is he isn’t afraid to take a hit and stays calm despite the pressure. That almost makes the clips above where he bails out of clean pockets even more frustrating.

To finish, he slightly adjusts his arm angle to get the ball around the free rusher and tosses a completion for a first down while putting the offense in field goal range. While yes, the pass was dangerously close to falling short of the target, not being able to finish the throw because of the pressure does play a factor in that, in addition to a lack of arm strength.

In summary, there are elements of Minshew’s game to like, but he’s too inconsistent to be crowned the Raiders’ starting quarterback without at least having a competition between him, Aidan O’Connell and/or a rookie.

Veteran tackle has been with Raiders since 2018

Brandon Parker’s time with the Las Vegas Raiders is over.

The veteran offensive tackle has signed with the San Francisco 49ers where he’ll compete for a roster spot.

Parker’s time with the Raiders wasn’t overly successful, but it was interesting for sure. The Raiders, under the leadership of coach Jon Gruden and general manager Reggie McKenzie, traded up to the first pick of the third round in 2018 to take Parker out of small-school North Carolina A&T. At the time, Parker said he was expecting to be drafted later.

Parker, 28, played in 59 games with the Raiders and he had 33 starts. He started most of the season in both 2018 and ‘21. He started one game with the Raiders in 2023 and played five games during the season.

He signed one-year contracts as a free agent with the Raiders in both 2022 and ‘23. He was put on the injured reserve before both seasons. He missed the entire 2022 campaign and was cut in 2023. But he re-signed later in the season.

The Raiders are expected to try to add to the tackle position and Parker likely wasn’t a priority for them.

Parker is the sixth Raiders’ unrestricted free agent to sign elsewhere this offseason. He joins running back Josh Jacobs (Green Bay), defensive tackle Bilal Nichols (Arizona), tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (Giants), cornerback Amik Robertson (Detroit) and tight end Austin Hooper (New England). Cut players, defensive tackle Jerry Tillery (Minnesota) and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (Rams) have also landed elsewhere this offseason.

So, who was the Raiders’ head coach likely keeping a close eye on down in Southern California?

EDGE Grabriel Murphy

Current draft projection (via NFL Mock Draft Database): 4th Round (ranks 129th overall)

While Laiatu Latu is the headliner among UCLA edge defenders, Las Vegas doesn’t have a pressing need at the position with Maxx Crosby, Malcolm Koonce and last year’s first-round pick Tyree Wilson under contract in 2024. However, Koonce’s deal expires at the end of the season and Wilson can play inside on passing downs, so the Silver and Black might look to pick up an athletic pass-rusher to develop in the later rounds.

Last season, Latu might have recorded more sacks but Murphy was right behind him in pressures, 62 to 61, according to Pro Football Focus. Also, the latter had an impressive 18.4 percent win rate that was second among Pac-12 edge rushers behind his future first-round pick teammate.

Below is a snippet from Murphy’s scouting report via Bleacher Report.

Gabriel Murphy has the potential to develop into an effective third-down rusher in the NFL. His athleticism and bend are apparent on film, which helped him win in college and be an effective looper in line games.

However, he does need to improve his use of hands to develop a go-to move or two. Murphy currently struggles with the accuracy and timing of his initial chops to begin his moves, making it difficult for him to “defeat the hands and defeat the man.” But the movement skills are there for him to develop a nasty stick move and build on his overall arsenal.

LB Darius Muasau

Current draft projection (via NFL Mock Draft Database): 7th Round (ranks 253rd overall)

Much like the team’s situation at edge, the Raiders don’t have an immediate need at linebacker but could use some depth for the future. Robert Spillane, Divine Deablo, Darien Butler and Luke Masterson are all about to enter contract years, so spending a Day 3 pick on Muasau wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Muasau was PFF’s highest-graded Pac-12 linebacker last season with a mark of 81.7 overall. That was primarily due to him recording 15 defensive stops in coverage, the third-most at the position in the conference.

Here’s a brief look at what NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein had to say about the former Bruin.

Linebacker with muscular build and an unrelenting desire to chase after the football. Muasau plays with a phenomenal motor and has the instincts and recognition to get the jump on blocking schemes. He plays with good initial quickness but lacks extended pursuit speed in space. He will take shots downhill to spoil the action, but teams will have to live with missed tackles and inconsistent leverage in his pursuit. Muasau can handle some basic short-zone coverage but could get in trouble if the coverage expands into larger spaces. He has the potential to make the back end of a roster as a late-round pick or priority free-agent addition.

RB Carson Steele

Current draft projection (via NFL Mock Draft Database): UDFA (ranks 289th overall)

With Josh Jacobs officially not returning to Sin City, the front office is expected to turn to a committee approach at running back. That means they’ll likely be stockpiling young backs next month, putting Steele on the table.

Between his two years at Ball State and last season with the Bruins, Steele racked up 3,259 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns while averaging 5.0 yards per carry over the last three years. Even more impressive, 2,497 of his yards (over 75 percent) came after first contact and he finished with a career average of 3.85 yards after first contact per attempt, via PFF.

He’s an efficient and decisive runner behind the line of scrimmage who understands his blocking scheme and how to set up his blocks. Steele does a good job of manipulating his tempo and path behind the line of scrimmage to influence defenders’ angles and help out his blockers. He has a good burst and solid acceleration through the hole and is an obviously powerful runner. Steele is difficult for lone defenders to bring down once he gets moving and consistently churns (or falls forward) for extra yards after initial contact.

Las Vegas has worked on position in past week

The Las Vegas Raiders have prioritized the defensive tackle position so far this offseason and they likely will continue to add there.

Let’s take a look where the position stands a week into free agency:

New free agent added:

Christian Wilkins.

Free agents reportedly re-signed:

Adam Butler, John Jenkins.

Free agent who departed:

Bilal Nichols (Arizona Cardinals).

Released:

Jerry Tillery (signed with Minnesota Vikings).

Other returners:

Byron Young, Matthew Butler, Nesta Jade Silvera, Marquan McCall.

Draft:

The Raiders could very well add to this position early in the draft, perhaps as early as their first-round pick, No. 13.

Conclusion:

Wilkins is a game-changer. He is a top-level player at the position and gives the Raiders a presence on the interior defensive line that they haven’t had in years. Butler and Jenkins are nice lunch pail players. They will probably keep five defensive tackles on the 53-man roster. This is a big developmental year for Young, Butler and Silvera. They have to show something. If Wilkins can get some help, watch out for this group.

Raiders have big a big move, but have been slow otherwise

NFL free agency started last week and it’s been an interesting process for the Las Vegas Raiders.

They made a huge splash hours into free agency by signing Miami Dolphins standout defensive tackle Christian Wilkins. Later that day, they added potential starting quarterback Gardner Minshew and then Tuesday, they signed back up tight end Harrison Bryant.

But they haven’t added any outside free agents since. That could change soon as they have visits with running back Alexander Mattison and cornerback Tre’Davious White.

According to Over The Cap, the Raiders have more than $28 million in salary cap room, so they will add more players and, of course, they’ve re-signed five of their own free agents.

Yet, the reality is, most of the free-agent market has dried up the quality of players is much less strong than it was a week ago.

How do you feel about the Raiders’ free-agent thus far. Are you happy with it are would you you have liked to see more players being brought in?

There are some key defenders who Las Vegas could try to lock up

The Las Vegas Raiders are still working on this year’s free agency, but, in the NFL it’s never too early to think about the future.

The Raiders have four key defensive players who are entering their fourth season and will be eligible to be free agents next year. All of them are now eligible to get a contract extension. The Raiders could extend any of them early like the previous regime did two years ago with Maxx Crosby and then since-released Hunter Renfrow.

With $24 million in salary-cap room coming to the Raiders after June 1 because of the Jimmy Garoppolo release, new deals for current player son the roster (including Crosby) could occur.

Here is a look at the players from the 2021 draft class in question:

Tre’von Moehrig:

The second-round pick has had an interesting career so far. The safety was good as a rookie. Yet, he struggled in Patrick Graham’s defense in 2022, but he enjoyed a bounce-back season in 2023. He showed his ball-hawking ability and game awareness that made him a top prospect at TCU. The Raiders may want to see if Moehrig can have another strong season in 2024 especially at a position where there have been a lot of free-agent options in recent years.

Malcolm Koonce

Malcolm Koonce:

What an interesting player. The third-round pick did little in his first two NFL seasons. He had a total of two sacks in his first two seasons. Yet, he exploded in 2023 with eight sacks. He had six sacks in the final four games and he was downright explosive and unstoppable at times. Still, it will be interesting to see if the Raiders try to lock him up. They might want to see if he could keep it up and he should playing with Maxx Crosby and new defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on a tough defensive front. But Koonce could also want to bet on himself. Pass-rushers get paid big time in free agency and he may want to try to get on the open market. Of course, if Koonce has a monster 2024 season, the Raiders may have to give him the franchise tag. This is a fascinating situation,

Divine Deablo:

The third-round pick had 106 tackles last season and he seems to fit the defense. Yet, he is probably closer to average than elite and has missed 10 games due to injury in his career. The Raiders probably wouldn’t be ready to give Deablo a huge deal now.

Nate Hobbs:

The fifth-round pick is an extremely solid nickel cornerback. He is the type of player teams want to keep. He has missed 11 games in his career, but the Raiders could try to lock him up early. However, like Koonce, Hobbs may bet on himself and he could get a big, nice deal on the open market. If Koonce and Hobbs both play out their contractors and both have a big year in 2024, only one could be franchised. So, there are reasons for the Raiders to try to get something done with Hobbs now.
