Well, the next five weeks are going to be interesting

The Las Vegas Raiders are cooking. But do they have enough time?

The rest of the AFC may want to take notice, but this team looked dangerous in a 27-20 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Let’s look at some keys to the win:

The next five weeks:

The Raiders are either going to fight their way back into the playoff mix or they going to screw up a top draft pick. Las Vegas has won three straight games since falling to 2-7 and being in line for the No. 2 overall draft pick. Now, all bets are off. The Raiders still have a deep hill to climb in the AFC playoff picture, but they are currently in 10th place in the AFC playoff chase and are two games out of the seventh and final playoff spot. So, it’s not out of the question and their remaining schedule isn’t bad as the Raiders will face, at least, two backup quarterbacks down the stretch. Things are, at the very least, interesting as we enter the heart of December football.

Hobbs on outside:

In his first game since breaking his hand in Week 5 at Kansas City, Raiders’ standout cornerback Nate Hobbs started on the outside. Safety Roderic Teamer was the big nickel. While they can still mix it up, it’s a strong likelihood Hobbs, who had a huge fumble recovery in the third quarter, will continue to play on outside for the rest of the season.

Get-well game?

The Raiders have a chance to win Thursday at the Los Angeles Rams on a short week. The Rams are without quarterback Matthew Stafford, superstar defensive tackle Aaron Donald and wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson. This is a real opportinity for the Raiders, who will be very likely playing in front of a friendly crowd at SoFi Stadium. Key Raiders’ offensive pieces, tight end Darren Waller and slot receiver Hunter Renfrow, are both eligible to return from the injured reserve this week. it will be interesting to see if they have a chance to get back on a short week.

What a place:

This was my first experience at Allegiant Stadium, covering the game. What a tremendous experience. The joint is beautiful and this great fan base so much deserves this beauty. Sitting here, it reminded me of being in (then Pac Bell Park) watching my beloved San Francisco Giants there for the first time. I kept thinking about all those days at Candlestick Park. What a difference. The same goes for the Raiders and this place after all those years at the Oakland Coliseum. It was a dump, but lovable. This place, though, is sweet. And, yes, Raiders fans can get pretty loud in the joint.

An instant review of the Raiders’ third-straight victory

The Las Vegas Raiders hosted the Los Angeles Chargers at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday and came away with a big 27-20 victory. Let’s take a look at the key aspects of the game:

Records:

The Raiders are 5-7. The Chargers are 6-6.

What it means:

The Raiders aren’t dead yet. They have now won three straight games and still have a heartbeat in the AFC playoff picture with five games remaining. They split the season series with the Chargers, avenging a Week 1 24-19 loss. Do we dare call this a winning streak???

Turning point:

The Raiders the game early in the third quarter when they forced a fumble on the Chargers, who were leading 13-10 at the half, on the opening drive of the half and then Derek Carr hit Davante Adams for a quick touchdown pass to take the lead. The two hooked up for another score late in the quarter as the Raiders took over. It got interesting late, but doesn’t it always with these guys?

Injury report:

Raiders’ tight end Foster Moreau was being checked for a concussion in the first quarter, but he returned in the second quarter. Starting cornerback Nate Hobbs, in his first game back since breaking his hand in Week 5, went into the medical tent in the second quarter, but he came back. Raiders’ pass-rusher Chandler Jones, who had his best game as a Raider, was banged up in the second quarter but came back the same drive. Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin had a knee injury in the fourth quarter and did not return. That can be concerning. Linebacker Jayon Brown got shaken up in the fourth quarter.

What’s next:

The Raiders have a short week as they play at the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday. Kickoff is at 5:15 p.m. The Rams are 3-9 after a home 27-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Star tailback was listed as questionable to play with calf injury

The Las Vegas Raiders got a big boost Sunday when star running back Josh Jacobs was ruled active or inactive for Sunday’s against the Los Angeles Chargers at Allegiant Stadium. Kickoff is at 1:25 p.m. PT.

Jacobs had been dealing with a calf injury that he suffered November 25 in practice. He aggravated the injury late in a 40-34 overtime in at the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday which he ended with a 86-yard touchdown run. It culminated a 229-yard rushing yard performance by Jacobs. It was a franchise record. He was listed as questionable to play in the game.

Jacobs, who is leading the NFL with 1,159 rushing yards, practiced on a limited basis all week in preparation to face the Chargers, who are allowing an NFL-worst 5.4 yards a carry on the ground. So, this could be a huge key to the game.

Meanwhile, the team had four other played listed as questionable, linebacker Denzel Perryman (wrist), defensive tackle Andrew Billings (fibula), cornerback Tyler Hall (back) and running back Brandon Bolden (calf). Billings and Hall are inactive. Billings has been a big part of the rotation at defensive tackle.

In addition, the Raiders’ other inactive players Sunday are running back Brittain Brown and rookie defensive tackle Neil Farrell, a fourth-round pick. Fifth-round pick Matthew Butler is active over him.

It was absolutely one of the best games of the 2021 NFL regular season and it just happened to be the last one. The Raiders won an epic 35-32 overtime game in prime time. The win sent the Raiders to the playoffs and sent the Chargers home.

Now, the two teams are back in Allegiant Stadium for the first December game of the season. Both teams are coming off big last-second wins. The Chargers are trying to hang in the playoff race and the Raiders are trying to climb into it.

Complementary football is a must for Las Angeles against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday. | Photo by Jane Gershovich/Getty Images

Continued complementary football vital for Las Vegas in division matchup with Los Angeles

The resurgence of complementary Las Vegas Raiders football is a major reason the team has gone from an inexcusable loss three weeks ago to back-to-back victories the last two weeks. In the Silver & Black version of All-22, all 11 Raiders on offense and defense did their jobs — something that’s been super elusive the weeks prior.

Hence the team’s disappointing 4-7 record.

Yet, everyone doing their job is the backbone of Las Vegas’ victories.

“Yeah, absolutely, and that’s a perfect picture of football,” Raiders quarterback Derek Carr said when asked if all 11 guys doing their job on offense is what is preached in HQ. “Like, we see eight-yard gains, and we say, ‘Wow, what a great run,’ and all that kind of stuff. That’s what happens when everyone does the right thing all the time. Defensive guys get paid too and make good plays and all that kind of stuff all the time. So, for something to come together like that, it doesn’t happen often, but it was great timing for us.”

Nail. On. Head. Carr is right that the Raiders coming together hasn’t occurred as frequently as the team would like. Yet, playing complementary football isn’t because of something super natural. It’s player execution that’s occurring much more frequently. And the onus on ensuring it’s a habitual thing instead of rare occurrences is on the Raiders moving forward.

Las Vegas defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, who helms a unit that’s received severe criticism throughout the season, was asked during his mid-week media session if his players had an understanding of what he’s wanted them to do in last Sunday’s walkoff overtime win against the Seattle Seahawks. And his answer was relatively elementary.

“I wouldn’t say a little bit more. I mean, sometimes the ball bounces the wrong way. But the guys have been working really hard all year,” Graham said. “I think coach talked about in his press conference, the temperature really hasn’t changed. The guys have been focused, just some breaks here and there. I think the one thing like coach said, they’re learning how to play together. All three phases, learning how to gut it out for a full 60 or 65 minutes, whatever it may take. And I’m just happy that they’re getting the reward.”

Rewards, however, are a fleeting thing, too. Las Vegas has an AFC West divisional game against the incoming Los Angeles Chargers, a team that is not only 6-5, but beat the Silver & Black 24-19 in the season opener. A Raiders win would make Las Vegas 5-7 and L.A. 6-6, helping to close the gap between second place in the division.

“And again, now we got to reset, come back in tomorrow, and get ready to go for the Chargers because it’s big division game and big challenge ahead of us,” Graham said. “A home game, give the fans something to cheer about there with that. I know the guys, they’ve been working hard all year and focused, and I know that right now their attentions have turned to the Chargers.”

Complementary football will be a must once more for the Raiders this Sunday against the Chargers in Allegiant Stadium. A series like Las Vegas did against Seattle — a Denzel Perryman interception was a takeaway the defense needed and on the ensuing drive, running back Josh Jacobs galloped in for a touchdown — would do wonders against L.A.

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen, left, didn’t have kind words for the Las Vegas Raiders secondary.

Especially considering what Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen told the L.A. Times’ Jeff Miller.

“Barbecued chicken,” Allen said when asked about the Raiders using man-to-man coverage at a rate that ranks the Silver & Black ninth in the league in terms of usage. “No doubt. That means they’re dead. You’re gonna get to see ‘Slayer.’”

‘Slayer’ is Allen’s nickname and it’s somewhat apt. In 16 career games against the Raiders (the Bolts are 10-6 in that span), Allen has 1,058 yards and five touchdowns on 97 receptions. Although, his last touchdown against the Silver & Black was back in Week 15 of the 2020 season — a game the Chargers lost 31-26.

However, perhaps Allen doesn’t get to go BBQ chicken on the Raiders secondary. Not if the Chargers can’t properly protect quarterback Justin Herbert. In the Bolts’ last three games, Herbert sustained 11 total sacks with five and four coming in the last two weeks. The Raiders premiere pass rusher, Maxx Crosby, is a man possessed the last three games racking up 4.5 sacks with 3.5 of those coming the last two games.

Compounding protection matters for the Bolts is missing key linemen in center Corey Linsley and right tackle Trey Pipkins. If Crosby goes off again, the Herbert to Allen connection likely gets zapped.

We want to know your predictions for the final score in the Las Vegas Raiders’ home game against the Los Angeles Chargers at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:25 p.m. PT.

Please give your final score predictions in the comment section below and the reason why.

The Chargers have had a lot of injuries and have been up and this season. But they are a solid team that is difficult to beat. The Chargers beat the Raiders 24-19 at home in Week 1 so they will be going for a season sweep of their AFC West rival.

Let’s see how it goes and thanks for playing along.
