The football gods smiled on the Raiders on Sunday

Remember last season? That was wild.

Well, apparently, it was just a warm up. In a 2022 season filled of unlikely finishes, Sunday topped it with one of the most memorable, silliest endings in NFL history as the Las Vegas Raiders beat the New England Patriots 30-24 on a Chandler Jones lateral return on the stupidest play you will ever see as time expired.

Let’s dive into the details:

The gods were smiling:

Nothing will likely ever make up for the Tuck Rule game but it is pretty delicious that this was the Patriots who handed the Raiders this unforgettable victory. This game was over. But the Raiders got a gift call from the officials on a 30-yard touchdown by Keelan Cole to tie the game in the final minute. It’s Ok, we can all admit it, Cole’s foot was out. It would have bene third and 10 from the 30 with just seconds remaining.

But hey, the play stood and then, it was Jakobi Meyers who gifted the Raiders the win. We’ve see these types of things happen on desperation plays at the end of the game. But not like this. This game was seconds from going to overtime. The Patriots didn’t need to be desperate. That’s why it will be remembered as an all-time dumb NFL play. The Raiders have taken a lot of gut punches this season, but this one eases the pain some and will never be forgotten by the Raider Nation.

Win masked some issues:

Could you imagine if the unimaginable didn’t happen? The Raiders were a miracle away from being 0-5 in games that they led by double digits (17-3) at halftime. People would be calling for Josh McDaniels to be fired on the spot right now. The Raiders were outscored 21-0 in the second half until the nuttiness ensued. The offense was awful. The Raiders didn’t do anything. But they found a way to win. Yet, the reality is 14 games into the season and the Raiders are basically who they are. Sometimes they win close games, more often, so far, they lose close games. Today, however, was one of the good days,

Carr throws another Pick 6:

The Patriots started their comeback on a great interception for a touchdown by Kyle Dugger on a screen pass deep in Las Vegas territory. He read it all the way.

It was the second straight home game that Carr threw a Pick 6. Remarkably, the Raiders won both games. Carr has thrown six interceptions in the past four games and if the Raiders don’t make the playoffs, his play down the stretch could determine in his future in Las Vegas.

Playoffs?

Yes, playoffs. The Raiders now have a five percent chance of making the playoffs. They need a lot of help, but the Patriots began the gift-giving season Sunday. So, we shall see. Maybe they win their final four games of the season to make the playoffs for the second straight year.

Streak over:

The Raiders’ defense had a stretch in which they allowed 32 straight touchdowns when their opponent had goal-to-go. It ended in the second quarter with a ton of help by the Patriots. New England scored twice in the sequence, but coach Bill Belichick called a time out before one and a false start wiped away another on fourth down. They had to settle for a field goal. By any means necessary, I suppose.

Luke Masterson

Masterson shines:

Undrafted rookie linebacker Luke Masterson continued to flash Sunday. He finished with five tackles and he made two big plays on a drive in the second quarter. The Wake Forest safety turned NFL linebacker has taken advantage of his opportunities through injuries and has been a solid starter in recent weeks. It will be interesting to see if the Las Vegas brass pencils him in as a 2023 starter this offseason or looks to upgrade.

Big special teams play:

The Raiders have been quietly solid on special teams this season. Sunday, they came up with a big play, with backup defensive end Malcolm Koonce blocking a punt and taking over deep in New England territory in the final minute of the first half. It setup a touchdown and gave Las Vegas a 17-3 lead at halftime. It was the Raiders’ first blocked punt in eight years.

Grasu starts:

The Raiders used their 15th different offensive line alignment of the season. With major upheaval at guard, the Raiders started backup center/guard Hroniss Grasu at right guard. Starter Alex Bars didn’t play because of a knee injury he suffered in Week 14. The Raiders just cut guards John Simpson and the injured Lester Cotton. Newly signed Natane Muti was inactive. Perhaps he might be in the mix next week if Bars can’t play at Pittsburgh on Saturday night especially with rookie left guard Dylan Parham hurting his leg Sunday. Jordan Meredith, elevated form the practice squad Saturday, replaced Parham.

Big Patriots’ crowd:

As has been the case, often at Allegiant Stadium was opened to fans last season, there was a big presence by visiting fans. There were many Patriots’ fans in the stands.

Las Vegas Raiders beat the Patriots 30-24 thanks to an outstanding play by Chandler Jones - and a ridiculous decision by New England Patriots.

The Las Vegas Raiders just beat the New England Patriots 30-24 in a stunning way at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday in the most insane ending to a game that we’ve ever witnessed.

The Raiders still have a heartbeat in the AFC playoff race with three games to go. With Kansas City winning in overtime at Houston on Sunday, the Raiders will officially go another season without winning the AFC West title. It was the Chiefs’ seventh straight division crown.

Star running back was listed as questionable to play

Josh Jacobs is four-for-four in his battle against injuries in the past month.

Although he was listed as questionable to play Sunday against the New England Patriots at Allegiant Stadium (kickoff is at 1:05 p.m. PT), the star Las Vegas Raiders running back, as expected, is active and will play.

Starting guard Alex Bars and starting cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (they both have knee injuries) were both ruled out of Sunday’s game on Friday. Bars was hurt against the Rams and this will be Ya-Sin’s second missed game.

In addition to Jacobs, defensive tackle Andrew Billings (fibula), tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (oblique, wrist), linebacker Denzel Perryman (hip and backup offensive lineman Jackson Barton (back) were all questionable to play. They were all listed as limited in practice. Billings and Barton are the only players in that group to be inactive Sunday. Billings didn’t play in Week 14 either

Kickoff is at 1:05 p.m.. PT, here’s everything you need to know on how to watch the game

This is a reunion week for many people as the New England Patriots visit the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Of course, first-year Raiders coach Josh McDaniels came to Las Vegas from New England this year and he spent 18 years there. Also, many Raiders’ coaches, players and front-office people have New England ties.

But this is no time for emotional memories. The Raiders are in survival mode and essentially need to win their final four games of the season (sound familiar?) and ask for some help to have any chance of making the playoffs and they can be eliminated this week.

Raiders get help for the offensive line

The Las Vegas Raiders' offensive line has constantly been changing all year. A consistent lineup since Week 5 displayed inconsistency, but a unit should grow together.

Offensive stars activated from IR.

When the Las Vegas Raiders put together the team in the offseason, Davante Adams, Darren Waller, and Hunter Renfrow were supposed to put on a show. However, we have barely seen the three play together in 2022 with injuries to Waller and Renfrow.

Waller has been dealing with a hamstring injury that has been bothering him all year. Renfrow’s oblique injury put him on IR after missing time previously with a concussion.

After practicing this week, Waller and Renfrow were cleared to play on Sunday.

While it all could be too late, Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler want to evaluate the group together to decide the future. The Raiders will get a good look against the best defenses in the league facing the New England Patriots. It all can determine what moves they decide to make going into 2023.

The Raiders waived WR DJ turner and TE Jacob Hollister to make room for the two stars.

With injuries, New England's RBs are mystery

Over the last few weeks, the New England Patriots have been without one of their top two running backs, Damien Harris. While Harris is expected to return against the Las Vegas Raiders, Rhamondre Stevenson, the Patriots’ other back, suffered an injury on Monday and Stevenson’s status for Sunday is now in question.

Rookie Pierre Strong Jr. looked sharp last week for New England, giving the Raiders another rusher to worry about and making it difficult to determine who to prepare for. So, I made sure to ask Taylor Kyles of Pats Pulpit about the running back situation as well as a few other questions to give Raider Nation a preview of the game.

Question: Earlier in the season, there was a lot of chatter about the Patriots making a quarterback switch but Mac Jones appears to have taken command of the starting spot over the last month or so. What made those conversations start and how did Jones manage to silence his critics? Or has he?

Answer: The Patriots wanted to be an aggressive, downfield passing attack early in the season. They were a more explosive offense during this phase, but the philosophy clearly didn’t fit their personnel and Mac Jones started throwing interceptions at an uncharacteristic rate, largely due to poor decisions.

When Jones had to miss time due to a high ankle sprain and top backup Brian Hoyer suffered a concussion after less than a quarter of action in Green Bay, the team was forced to roll with rookie Bailey Zappe. The fourth-round QB helped New England pull itself out of a rut by not turning the ball over and capitalizing on most opportunities when they presented themselves. That said, it was clear to those watching closely that Zappe is not yet a starting caliber player and a significant step down from a first-round talent.

Despite being in just his second season, Jones is a leader in the locker room and players defended him against accusations of a QB controversy. When he returned, the team went back to their quick passing game roots and turnover numbers improved, but offensive line issues and inconsistency at receiver has forced the offense to play conservatively.

Because of those factors, and the infamous coaching staff situation, I don’t think anyone watching Jones the past few weeks would blame him for the offense’s struggles. There are glimpses of growth and talent, but he’s been fighting an uphill battle.

Q: How likely is it that Rhamonde Stevenson and/or Damien Harris play on Sunday, and what would you expect to see from the Patriots’ offense if they can’t play?

A: Stevenson hasn’t participated in practice this week, while Harris has been limited. Based on this, I’d wager Stevenson rests this week and Harris plays on a conservative snap count, though I could also see the team spelling him an extra week.

I’d be more worried about this situation if not for the emergence of the Patriots’ rookie running backs in Arizona. Despite being drafted in the sixth-round, former South Carolina back Kevin Harris received the lion’s share of snaps once Stevenson went down. He’s a physical runner with exceptional vision and enough burst to catch defenders off guard. He fits well into the team’s workhorse role and held up well in pass protection.

Former South Dakota State Jackrabbit Pierre Strong Jr was RB2 following Stevenson’s injury, but he showed off the explosive potential that made him a fourth-round selection on a few runs and one electric screen.

If the Patriots’ top-two backs are indeed out, expect majority gap runs with Kevin Harris in the backfield and more zone concepts with Strong Jr.

Q: DraftKings Sportsbook has the Raiders’ total points set at 21.5 and it’s no secret that their offense goes as Josh Jacobs goes. So, two-part question, how do you think New Englands’ run defense stacks up against Jacobs and Las Vegas’ rushing attack, and would you take the over or under on that bet?

A: The Patriots’ defense has been excellent against rushing attacks without a dual-threat passer this season, but their performances against James Conner last week and the Packers earlier this season do give me some pause.

Despite being an excellent tackling team, the defense struggled bringing down Green Bay’s big backs and had some rough moments against James Conner, who scored a 10-yard touchdown while carrying several defenders.

If the Raiders can exploit the Patriots’ even nickel fronts and bounce a couple of duo runs against 5-man surfaces, Jacobs may be able to rip off a few chunk plays to keep the run game a viable threat throughout the game. That said, the Patriots have been tough to score on in the Red Area and the Raiders have struggled in that department, so I’d take the under.

Q: Building on that, Bill Belichick has been known for taking away the opposing team’s best offensive weapon, but the Raiders have two really good weapons in Jacobs and Davante Adams. Between Jacobs and Adams, who do you think Belichick/the Patriots’ defense will prioritize stopping, and what would their plan be for keeping the other guy in check?

A: I think the Patriots’ main priority will be making sure Davante Adams doesn’t kill them. The Patriots are a single-high shell defense at their core, but like most defenses they’ve been more willing to go two-high against teams with a game-changing WR1. While I do think they’ll spend most snaps in cover three or man-free, expect to see some cover two, cover four or six, and two-man mixed in.

If Josh Jacobs’ running forces them into Cover 3 consistently on early downs, it could be a long day for the pass defense.

Q: Josh Uche has been playing well lately and Matthew Judon is currently tied for the league lead in sacks. How do those two complement each other, and what have opponents done to keep them off the quarterback?

A: Matt Judon has been getting a lot of extra attention in the form of doubles and chip blocks the past few weeks, which has helped create a lot of 1-on-1 opportunities for Josh Uche. There have also been times where Judon creating disruption has helped Uche notch sacks.

That said, Uche has looked like a premier pass rusher even though his competition hasn’t been great lately. His burst and bend are rare, and he’s been using hesitation moves and precise hands to give tackles fits. He’s been creating opportunities for himself and his teammates by generating consistent pressure when passer’s don’t get the ball out quickly.
