The chances of Darren McFadden playing this week were already slim. Now he has shown up at practice in a walking boot.

Dennis Allen may not be ruling Darren McFadden out for Sunday's game but the walking boot he is wearing pretty much ends and discussion there. The same goes for Mike Goodson who was also sporting a walking boot.

McFadden suffered what is being called a high ankle sprain in Sunday's game versus the Buccaneers. X-rays and an MRI have come up negative but we have heard this story before with regard to McFadden's wheels.

He went out with a Lis Franc injury last season and test results were negative then too. He was out the final ten games of the season. So much for that.

Mike Goodson also has a high ankle sprain. He too has not been ruled out for this Sunday's game but there is really no chance he plays. High ankle sprains can keep players out for a very long time. For instance, Shawntae Spencer went out with a sprained foot in week two and he has yet to return. That's two months... so far.

The walking boot development only further raises the unlikelihood that we see McFadden take the field anytime soon.

The Raiders lost both their top two running backs last week to high ankle sprains. That usually means they will miss a good amount of time. But despite this fact, the Raiders have not added any new running backs to the mix.

Both Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson were not practicing on Wednesday as expected. They both have high ankles sprains which means we should also expect they will miss at least this week's game if not more. But head coach Dennis Allen somehow is not of the same mind.

He has not ruled out either back for Sunday's game. In addition the team did not host or sign any running backs to fill the void which will very likely be left when neither of them plays. He claims the Raiders have the running backs in house.

"I think it is a reflection that we have got some guys in house that we feel like could step in if need be and that's the way it is anywhere in the NFL," said Dennis Allen. "It is really a next man up philosophy and we are going to have to count on some guys to step up potentially and fill a bigger roll but we will know more at the end of the week exactly what we need to do."

The Raiders have just one other running back on the roster- Taiwan Jones. They have two fullbacks in Marcel Reece and Owen Schmitt. Reece lined up at running back last week late in the game but didn't carry the ball at all and hasn't carried the ball once this season. Jones has been in the doghouse for the entire season because of his fumbling issues. He touched the ball twice on Sunday and fumbled on one of those touches. One would think that wouldn't endear him to coaches, and yet somehow Allen suddenly believes in him.

It is good that Taiwan is getting his shot finally. But going into this game with one healthy half back is not wise. The only other option at this point is activating rookie running back Jeremy Stewart from the practice squad. That invokes even less confidence than relying on Jones but at least it would provide a backup plan in case Jones gets injured.

The Raiders were able to put up a lot of passing yards against the Buccaneers and their 31 ranked pass defense. But that also resulted in three interceptions because there was no run threat. The Ravens have a much better pass rush especially with Terrel Suggs back. So leaning on Carson Palmer with little run threat again is unwise.

But that's where the Raiders are at. Preparing to make that East Coast trip with one unproven, fumble prone running back and two fullbacks. Dennis Allen may not be officially ruling out Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson but that is inconsequential. If by some miracle, either of them play, they will be useless liabilities.

Darren McFadden is going to have an MRI on his ankle injury but the prognosis is not very uplifting.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the ankle injury DMC has is a high ankle sprain. This is terrible news as high ankle sprains are notoriously slow to heal, as is McFadden himself.

This is another step in the wrong direction for the injury prone running back. Things haven't been going well for DMC this year and now they are getting worse. It is especially debilitating coming after McFadden's best game of the year last week against Kansas City.

The high ankle sprain diagnosis means that DMC is likely out for an unknown amount of time. There is no timetable for recovery that has been announced yet but with Darren's injury history it does not look promising. Hopefully he can recover quickly but as of right now I have little reason to be optimistic about it.

With the status of Mike Goodson still unknown it leaves Taiwan Jones and Marcel Reese as the only health Oakland running backs. If McFadden misses a considerable amount of time the Raiders will likely have no choice but to look for a free agent running back. Its just the Raiders luck for an injury like this to happen directly after the trading deadline has passed.

The Raiders could suddenly be in a bind at running back. They came into the game with both Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson in the lineup and by the end, they had lost both to ankle injuries.

Darren McFadden left the game in the second quarter with his ankle injury and was taken to the locker room. X-rays came up negative but he didn't return to the game. As we know, X-rays don't mean much often times. For instance, X-rays came up negative last season on his foot even though he was lost for the season with a Lis franc foot injury.

McFadden was replaced in the game by Mike Goodson but he too would leave the game after about a quarter of action. The diagnosis following the game was a sprained ankle. We don't know yet whether it is a high ankle sprain or not. He was replaced by Marcel Reece and later Taiwan Jones saw action as well.

The result of McFadden leaving the game as well as Goodson was the Raiders finishing with 17 total rushing yards in the game. They were also throwing the ball a lot due to the Buccaneers three third quarter touchdowns. But not having a legitimate running threat contributed as well.

"Yeah, when you lose your top two runners, yeah it limits you." said Dennis Allen. "We had Marcel in at the end of the game running some tailback plays in there so... yeah when we have injuries, it changes what you're able to do."

This leaves the team with just two healthy running backs on the team-- Marcel Reece and Taiwan Jones. Reece doesn't have an issue with that.

"Go to work." said Reece of what to do if the team loses both McFadden and Goodson. "We have a lot of playmakers on this team. We'll continue to pray for our teammates and hope that everybody has a speedy recovery. We don't know what any issues are right now but after we find that out, we go to work."

Reece is a fullback by trade which makes Taiwan Jones the only other actual tailback on this roster and they have gone away from him in the run game completely. If McFadden and/or Goodson are out for even one game, they may have to consider adding a running back to the roster. We'll know more Monday.
