Not since the rout by the Bengals in the season opener have the Raiders played an uglier game than they did Sunday against the Lions. Playing that way against the Bengals made at least some sense considering the Bengals are one of the best teams in the league this season. Playing that way against the Lions is inexcusable.

Thoughout the first half, the Raiders defense was playing ‘bend but don't break' football. Not that they have much of a choice; it's either that or just break. Meanwhile the offense was taking a 30-minute break. And therefore the Lions took a 9-0 lead at half time off of three field goals.

Suddenly in the third quarter, the offense decided to get off the couch and score on their first two possessions to take a 13-9 lead. It wouldn't last because the Lions took their first drive of the fourth quarter for their first touchdown of the day.

From there on out the Raiders were pathetically bad the rest of the way. The offense ran seven plays with the final play being a safety for the final score of 18-13. That score was upheld by a final Lions drive that bled 7:22 off the clock. A complete and utter collapse. So, let's get to it, shall we?

Ballers

Khalil Mack

Mack led the team with 8 tackles, all solo. Two of those tackle were for a loss. He added a QB hurry as well. Midway through the second quarter, with the Lions up 6-0, he made the stop on third down on a catch short of the sticks to force a punt.

In the third quarter, after the Raiders had scored for the first time to pull to within two at 9-7, he had a tackle for a loss of one on first down, and made the run stop on second down as well. It set up third and five where Matt Stafford was sacked. The favorable field position helped the Raiders to get into field goal range and take the 10-9 lead on the next drive. Then two plays later, he had another tackle for a loss of one to help lead to a three-and-out.

On the Lions long last drive, Mack seemed to be the only Raiders defender stopping anything. They got a first down on the second play. Then Mack made a run stuff for one yard. They got the first down on the next play on a screen pass. The play after that, Mack had another run stuff for one yard. And the Lions threw for the first down the following play. Mack had the effort, even if it was ultimately all for naught.

David Amerson

Four passes defended. That's impressive by itself. More impressive is three of those came while defending Calvin Johnson. Amerson's biggest pass defended was his first which came on third and goal from the 11-yard-line. He knocked down the Stafford pass intended for Golden Tate at the goal line and the Lions would be held to a field goal.

In total, Amerson gave up two catches for 24 yards in the game. Neither of those catches came on the final, clock-draining, game-sealing drive in the final minutes.

Honorable Mention

Michael Crabtree - Led the team with six catches for 50 yards. And he should have had one more, but it was ruled incomplete due to the NFL's ridiculous and nonsensical catch rules.

Sebastian Janikowski - Hit both of his field goals, including a 56-yarder which gave the Raiders a 13-9 lead to begin the fourth quarter.

Raider Nation is at a very difficult crossroads. On one side optimism is abound with a strong sense that the team is getting better and will be competing for years to come. On the other side we thought they would be competing this year after their hot start and now they have fallen apart.

This latest loss to the Detroit Lions stung the worst since their Week 1 annihalation at the hands of the Cincinnatti Bengals. It was ugly, boring, and featured some of the worst play from the offense that we have seen in Derek Carr's tenure in the NFL. They lost to a 2-7 team that they should have beaten, albeit one that is on a high after beating the Packers in Lambeau for the first time since 1991.

The defense for once wasn't even to blame for this game, they weren't perfect but they only gave up 16 points to the Lions (they got 2 points from a safety to equal their 18 on the day). It should have been enough to win. They bent throughout the game but stayed strong until the big drive from the Lions that retook the lead 16-13 with the scrambling touchdown from Matt Stafford. That drive was especially ugly, but the defense did well enough in the game for the win.

No, where the Raiders went wrong in this game fell squarely on their out of sync offense. There wasn't a single stand out player on the team yesterday from their highly touted playmakers, and their best player WR Amari Cooper had his worst game as a pro. What makes it so much worse was that this was a "must win" game that the team came out so unbelievably flat for.

The only player who stood out as having a truly great game was Khalil Mack on the defense who stepped up his game big time with Aldon Smith gone for the year. Mack was all over the place, tackling anything near him even when he had to chase them from behind to do it. He might not have the sack numbers that we envisioned, but Mack is as disruptive as can be for a single player that the offense knows they have to contain.

That is it though, with an honorable mention to Michael Crabtree who needs to be targeted even more than he currently is. The guy's hands are some of the best in the business, though even he only had 50 yards on his 6 receptions. That wasn't all his fault though, Derek Carr was not efficient against the Lions to say the least.

What can you really say at a time like this though? They are basically right dab in the middle of where anything positive comes off as naive, but anything too negative sounds like an over reaction when considering where the team is now compared to the last few years. That is where Raider Nation is though, drifting somewhere in between relevancy and laughing stock.

At 4-6 their playoff dreams are all but officially gone, they are not going to go 5-1 and they are unlikely to get enough help for it to matter even if they did. They haven't been mathematically eliminated so you die hard optimists can live on for slightly longer, but realistically any shot at the playoffs is pretty much caput.

The bigger thing for us to care about is just simply that the regression stops. They have a winnable game next week against the Titans before the schedule gets decidedly harder. Jack Del Rio needs to nip this slide in the bud this week so that the team can start improving for the future again. He is the one most responsible for the team being ready for each game and he utterly failed to do so yesterday against the Lions and to a lesser extent last week against the Vikings too.

Going into the upcoming heart of the schedule with Green Bay, Denver and 2 games against the Chiefs upcoming in their 6 remaining games is going to be hard. Heading into that schedule on the heels of a 4 game losing streak with 2 of those games being the Lions and the Titans would be downright unbearable. This is "must win" for their franchise, not just their season.

The truth is though, playoffs were always a long shot for this season. Their hot start made us all get giddy about the possibilities and excited for an even better season, but before the year we didn't think they would be a good team yet. Guess what? They are not a good team YET.

Get the young stars more experience, fight for the improbable playoff spot anyway, and get these players to have a consistently good effort from both sides of the field before the end of the year. The main goals now are to end the season with momentum, continue to instill the confidence that they are building something great here, and become the good team next season that they are capable of being.

Winning some this year assures everybody that they are on the same page and in for the long haul of sustained success for years to come. That is what is needed in the long run anyway because a flash in the pan of success before burning out all over again would be even worse than just continuing to be awful year after year. When these dark days are over they need to be over for a long time, and even with the current losing streak this team is still on a good path for that to become the reality. We hope.

Most predictions had the Raiders offense shaking off a down week against the Vikings in week 10 to return to form against the Lions and their weak defense. Not only did that not happen, the Raiders offense took another big step back.

There was no semblance of the aggressive, high-flying offense that had put up but numbers in the three weeks following their bye week. In those three games, the Raiders put up 37, 34, and 35 points and looked nearly unstoppable.

Last week the Vikings stopped them for the most part. But the Vikings have one of the better defenses in the league. The Lions do not.

The Lions defense coming in was ranked 25th in the NFL, 28th against the rush, and 23rd against the pass.

The result was a season low 169 yards passing and 50 yards rushing, for a total of 219 yards for the Raiders offense - all season lows.

Derek Carr completed just 13 of 25 passes (52%). It was the fewest completions, fewest passing yards, and worst completion percentage for Carr in any game this season (outside of the opener when he left in the first half with an injury).

Latavius Murray ran for 28 yards on 13 carries (2.2 yards per carry). It was his lowest rushing total and worst yards per carry of the season.

Their 13 points scored was tied for their second worst of the season. Only their game against the Broncos top ranked defense did they score fewer points (10).

After this one the Raiders need to take a long, hard look at themselves to see if they can bounce back again. For now the luster has worn off the Raiders offense which was among the most fearsome in the league just a couple weeks ago.

Coming off two-straight losses, the Raiders faced the Lions with their playoff hopes in the balance. A win keeps them very much alive, while a loss makes it very difficult the rest of the way. For the Raiders it would be the latter.

Early in the game, the Raiders' defensive mantra of ‘bend but don't break' was on full display. They bent a LOT on the Lions first two drives, letting them get into the red zone both time, but they managed to make the stop just in time to hold the Lions to a field goal both times.

Even with the stops, it wasn't pretty from the Raiders perspective. The Lions were picking up yards in chunks and taking anything they wanted. Though they had just six points to show for it.

On the Raiders' second series, they looked to have picked up the first down on a third and 9 pass to Michael Crabtree, but it was inexplicably ruled incomplete on the field. Crabtree had both feet inbounds with possession, then went out of bounds, taking three steps, stumbling and used the ball to catch his balance and it came out. That's a catch. And yet it was ruled incomplete. And the Raiders didn't challenge it.

Literally NO ONE knows what a catch actually is in the NFL anymore. But I digress.

The Raiders couldn't dwell on the terrible call on the catch. After the defense finally held to force a Lions punt, the offense went on their best drive of the day. Unfortunately, that was just to the Lions' 39-yard-line and could get no farther, forced to punt the ball away.

On the final drive of the first half, the Lions would get into field goal range and Matt Prater lined up and hit a 51-yarder to send the two teams into the locker room with a 9-0 Lions lead.

After the Raiders offense was dormant in the first half, they woke up on the first drive of the third quarter. The drive lasted 11 plays and was finished off by a touchdown run form one yard out by Latavius Murray. It brought the Raiders to within two points at 9-7.

The Raiders pass rush came alive on the next drive and ultimately it was a sack that ended the Lions' drive. After the punt the Raiders offense would take the field to being their drive at midfield. They use that short field to drive into field goal range and took a 10-9 lead on a 48-yard field goal from Sebastian Janikowski.

While the offense for the Raiders woke up, the defense got a shot of adrenaline and held the Lions deep in their own territory throughout the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Raiders put more points on the board with a 56-yard Janikowski field goal.

The Raiders' defensive domination ended when the third quarter did. On their first drive of the fourth quarter, the Lions scored their first touchdown of the game. The final two plays were Matt Stafford scrambles, including the touchdown from five yards out. It was the first rushing touchdown by the Lions since week three and it gave the Lions the lead at 16-13.

While trying to answer, the Raiders were backed up to their own end zone. Lions defensive end Ezekial Ansah got around Donald Penn who was called for holding in the end zone which resulted in a safety and an 18-13 Lions lead.

Off the safety, the Raiders kicked to the Lions who drove to the 2-yard-line, running out the clock to end it.

The Raiders drop their third straight game to fall to 4-6 on the season. The Lions improve to 3-7 on the season and have won two-straight.

The Detroit Lions started with the ball at home today, and they knew exactly what to do with it until they got down inside the 5 yard line. The Raiders defense was an absolute sieve throughout most of the drive but they came up huge in their goal line defense with two stopped runs from the 2 yard line, one of which the Lions were holding on, and then 2 broken up passes to force a Detroit field goal which made the score 3-0 Lions.

Oakland's drive started out on the 20 with some good news included; Rodney Hudson was able to start the game despite being questionable. It didn't help on this drive though, they went 3 and out right off the bat. Marquette King came out for his first punt of the day which went 40 yards with an 8 yard return so the Lions would start their next drive at their own 25 yard line.

Once again, the Raiders defense was basically non-existent early on. The Lions used their running backs and Calvin Johnson to push their way up into Raiders territory very quickly but again the Raiders defense came up big in the red zone. This time it was Benson Mayowa who got a big sack on 3rd down to force a second field goal for the Lions from Matt Prater. This one was 41 yards out and made the score 6-0.

The Raiders had to be feeling good after being completely dominated in time of possession (Detroit had the ball for 12:36 of the first 15 minutes) in the 1st quarter but still only being down 6-0. Oakland started out with the ball on their own 16 for their next drive, and they even had a nice drive going until the bullshit catch rule was inappropriately applied resulting in an incomplete pass on 3rd down. Marquette King's punt was a good one as it pinned the Lions down at their own 11.

Oakland's defense showed up right away this time and forced a three and out. Their offense started at the 46 yard line after the 53 yard punt was returned 12 yards by Amari Cooper with a 5 yard penalty added on after that. Too bad the offense still couldn't capitalize despite the great field position, they went three and out and punted it back yet again, this time the punt went 32 yards and was fair caught at the 15.

With the Raiders defense playing well now, they again came up with a three and out (though it looked like they got the first but were mistakenly marked short) on the Lions offense. Oakland started their next drive at their own 25 after the Detroit punt, and a nice 16 yard run from Latavius Murray got them into Detroit territory finally. However, they faltered after that and had to punt for the 4th time already today.

Detroit started out with the ball at their own 10 yard line after the nice punt from Marquette King. It looked like the Raiders might stop the Lions again but then on a 3rd and 15 in the final minute of the half Calvin Johnson hauled in a 36 yard pass to get Detroit into field goal range. An intentional grounding penalty pushed the Lions back, but Matt Prater kicked the 51 yard field goal no problem to make the score 9-0 at the half.

It is getting into ‘must-win' territory for the Raiders. They sit at 4-5 ready to face the 2-7 Lions in Detroit. Should the Raiders win, they would pull back to .500 and stay alive in the playoff race. Should they lose, they would fall to two games below .500, needing to go 5-1 the rest of the way to finish with a winning record and any chance of a playoff spot.

The Raiders are favorites in the game. It's the third time this season they have been favored and they lost the other two (Bears, Vikings).

Here are the many keys, story lines, and match-ups to follow in the Raiders' quest for victory Sunday against the Lions:

The post-Aldon Smith era begins

Through their first nine games this season, the Raiders had one of the NFL's elite pass rushers on the field for them. Those who would like to say he won't be missed point to his 3.5 sacks on the season. What they don't realize is Smith's presence made the entire defensive line better. He is at least partially responsible for Khalil Mack's team leading 5.0 sacks through the past seven games. Mack had zero sacks at this point last season due in large part to the lack of another pass rusher to take pressure off of him.

The Raiders will look to replace Smith with a couple players. Mostly they will look to fill the role with Benson Mayowa, who has the versatility of Smith but not near the talent or physical presence. The rest of the time they will use Ray Ray Armstrong to fill in at linebacker and hope Mario Edwards can add the pass rush to complement Mack. Remember, Edwards has been replacing Justin Tuck who was placed on injured reserve a few weeks ago.

Reigning Rookie of the Week Mario Edwards "better" up his game

As if leading the team in tackles (11) along with a sack and being voted Rookie of the Week wasn't enough, the Raiders are expecting even more from Mario Edwards with the losses of Justin Tuck and Aldon Smith.

"Well, he better (do more)." Ken Norton Jr said with a laugh. "He better. Anytime you have a good football player, you expect the good football players to play good and to really take advantage of opportunities. His development, as we've all seen, is right where it needs to be and he doesn't have a ceiling. It just goes. It's limitless. We just have to keep having him do what he does best."

What we are finding is Edwards' best is flying around the field and fighting his way into the opponents' backfield. He is showing an athleticism he didn't show at Florida State, mainly because he is now over 20 pounds lighter.

Rodney Hudson return?

After missing last week's game against the Vikings with a sprained ankle, Hudson returned to practice this week and is officially questionable for the game. His return is key not just from a physical standpoint, but from a mental standpoint. He had been replaced by Tony Bergstrom last week, and while Bergstrom filled in admirably, the offense definitely thrives with Hudson in the lineup. With Hudson healthy, the Raiders offensive line should dominate the Vikings defensive front.

TJ Carrie vs Calvin Johnson

As of last week, TJ Carrie returned to cornerback. It was Nate Allen's return from partial season IR that allowed Carrie to move back to the position which he had become the Raiders' best option. Now he will face off against arguably the most physically dominant receiver in the NFL in Calvin "Megatron" Johnson. That is literally a tall order for Carrie or any defensive back. If the Raiders are smart, they will keep DJ Hayden on the other side of the field from Megatron. The Lions best chance of putting points on the board is always to go to CJ due to their poor offensive line play which has rendered the run game toothless.

Donald Penn vs Ezekial Ansah

On the season, Ziggy Ansah has 7.0 sacks. That's the fifth most sacks in the NFL. Five of those sacks came directly through or around the opposing team's left tackle. One of the other sacks he lined up outside left tackle, and ran a stunt to inside through the left guard. That makes Ansah arguably the toughest task Penn has had to face all season long. Just like Megatron is the only elite player on the Lions offense, Ansah is the only elite player on their defense. Stopping him is the utmost priority.

Amari Cooper vs Darius Slay

The Lions' secondary is not great. The best of the bunch is Slay who leads the team with 10 passes defended and one interception. He is likely to be matched up with Raiders super rookie Amari Cooper.
